While these pursuits have their place, we must make a conscious effort to reconnect with the natural world.


Just 5-10 minutes of outdoor time daily can work wonders for mental health, boosting creativity, lowering anxiety, and improving self-esteem. As you gear up for the busy school year ahead, consider incorporating nature into your routine. Whether it's a quick walk in the park, a moment of reflection in your garden, or a family hike, the benefits are immediate and long-lasting. Dr. Razani underscores the profound benefits that nature offers to children. Until about two decades ago, children across cultures routinely walked long distances daily and had personal spaces where they could retreat and cope. Today, children still instinctively seek unstructured environments, free from adult-dominated spaces with restrictive rules. However, opportunities for such natural exploration have diminished as more areas become landscaped and regulated, often marked with signs like “Don’t Run,” “Don’t Jump,” and my personal favorite, the whimsical “Unattended Children Will Be Given an Espresso and a Free Puppy.”


While rules and structure are essential for maintaining order, it is equally important to allow children the freedom to build forts and explore nature. Such activities, typically enjoyed until around age 11, are crucial for their development. They teach children to coexist with all life forms and instill a lifelong desire to preserve and care for natural spaces.


Despite the numerous benefits, the average American spends only 7% of their life outdoors, a figure that increases to just 12% when including time spent in a car. It is crucial to engage in specific activities in nature to reap its full benefits. Whether it's a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting in a garden, making time for nature can significantly enhance our mental health.


Nature offers an accessible and powerful means to improve mental health. From boosting creativity and lowering anxiety to fostering empathy and improving self-esteem, the benefits are vast and well-documented. By integrating more time in natural environments into our daily lives, we can nurture our minds, bodies, and spirits, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
